Laughing Anyway
İnadına Gülüyoruz
A platform for comedians who can no longer perform freely.
Why
Across Turkey and much of the world, comedians are working under political pressure, legal threats and organised outrage. In Turkey, a comedian was recently jailed over material from his stand-up show. Stages are closing and self-censorship is growing.
But comedy doesn't disappear under pressure. It mutates, it gets sharper, and it finds new ways to be heard. Laughing Anyway is built to give that comedy a stage.
What we're building
A curated platform where comedians, starting in Turkey and expanding across the Middle East and beyond, can share their work with the world.
Comedy that travels: English subtitles that keep the punchline, with alternatives for wordplay and short notes that explain local references to international audiences.
The comedian has the final word: every translation is reviewed and approved by the comedian before it is published.
Identity protection: comedians at risk can take part anonymously, with reconstructed visuals and altered voices, so their jokes can travel without exposing who they are.
We use AI, including Anthropic's Claude, to make translation and protection possible at scale, always with people in the loop.
Connected to the film
Laughing Anyway grows out of Humour Is How We Survive, a short documentary by Serdar Kökçeoğlu on comedy under political pressure. The film asks how comedy survives. The platform is our answer.
Status
We are currently in the prototype stage, working with comedians in Istanbul.
